9 Things People Forget To Do Before They Move
There is always a million things to remember when you move! Don't worry, we have put together a handy checklist of things people often forget to do or don't even realize they should take care of, so you can make sure you're covered.
1) The first is pretty obvious, you will want to change your address with the U.S. Postal Service around 2 weeks before moving. The U.S. Postal Service offers an online form to quickly change an address for all of your mail, but that doesn't mean you should wait until the last minute to fill it out. To make sure mail arrives at your new home in time for your life there, complete the form about two weeks before your move.
2) The next would be your utility companies. You’ll need to ask your real estate agent how long you need to keep your current utilities on (it’s usually through closing), and you'll also need to work on contacting your new utilities companies. 3) The DMV is another thing that should be pretty high on your to do list. If you’re moving to a new state, you can learn about your new state’s requirements HERE.
4) Taking care of recurring charges or other subscription services may not be the first thing you think of when moving but should be done about 1 month before the move.
5) Calling your car insurance company is another thing that is often forgotten. The Department of Motor Vehicles advises people in the process of moving to closely manage their car insurance during the transition, especially if you are moving to another state as states have varying levels of required coverage.
6)
finances since losing track of bills while moving is so easy. You will want to make sure you have all your important documents packed, organized and labeled before you start packing everything else up so they don't get lost during the move and are easy to get to.
7) We recommend you take pictures of your electronics while they are still setup before you take them apart and coil the cords and label them with masking tape. This will save you so much time and headache when you go to put your electronics back together.
8) You will need a go-to box for the first couple of nights in your new home. Pack paper towels, cleaning supplies, clean sheets, towels, paper plates and silverware, toilet paper, and maybe even a bottle of bubbly to celebrate all your hard work.
9) Finally, don't forget to inform your family and friends, your current employer, your children’s schools, service providers, bank and credit card company, and family physician, about your new address.
